Advanced technology and information make it possible for the hospital industry in the U. S. to have changed rapidly. So to survive under this intense competition, hospitals have made various efforts, such as formation of local systems, mergers, and conversion services. Among others, this study focuses on hospital mergers that occurred frequently between 1980s and 1990s in the U. S. The study reviews on the previous research about effects of hospital mergers by dividing effects into three areas: price, efficiency, and reorganization. Although, in general, there is no agreement on the merger effect, this study finds there is a consensus on the efficiency and reorganization effects of hospital mergers.
